Randolph Mantooth.
September 19, 1945 – July 9, 2026
Fireman Johnny Gage was one of my television relatives growing up: a fun uncle or cool older cousin perhaps. Emergency! was a program my father watched in its original airing and passed along to his children decades later. I couldn't tell you the first time I saw an episode, but there is a written journal entry from my mother in the late ‘90s transcribing a dream 4-year-old me had the night before about the adventures of Johnny and Roy, and also my spoken wish that my oldest sister would marry Johnny (I really did want him as a member of the family).
To this day, Emergency! remains a comfort show. The easy chemistry between the cast, the unusual and surprising situations, the 1970s of it all. But, the heart of the show for me has always been and always will be Johnny Gage. Randolph Mantooth played the character with such kindness, humor, responsibility, and excellent goofball energy. He played a public worker who cared and was cool.
Inimitable. I can hear his voice and see him making one his faces (as seen above on the right) in my minds-eye at a moment’s notice. I will always think him fondly with his low-stakes schemes and thwarted plans. Maybe one day he will actually invent a card game with rules that finally allow him to be the winner!
Randolph Mantooth certainly left a legacy and something of himself behind that will be remembered always.
As for me, I think I will put on an episode of Emergency! tonight. <3
